Learn to recognize and address childhood anxiety with practical strategies to support and secure your child’s emotional health.

Hi Parents!
It’s DJ Stutz, and today I want to discuss a topic that’s increasingly relevant: anxiety in children. Recognizing and addressing anxiety early can make a big difference in helping your child feel supported and secure. Let’s explore the signs and some practical ways to help.

Children express anxiety in many ways, and it doesn’t always look like adult anxiety. Younger kids might experience frequent tummy aches, clinginess, or trouble sleeping. Older children may show irritability, avoidance of certain situations, or a sudden drop in school performance.

If you notice these behaviors, start by creating an open dialogue. Ask gentle questions like, “I’ve noticed you’ve been quiet lately. Is something bothering you?” Validate their feelings by saying, “It’s okay to feel nervous or worried sometimes. Let’s figure out what we can do together.”

Establish routines that provide structure and predictability, as these can help reduce anxiety. Encourage calming activities, such as drawing, reading, or spending time outdoors. These moments of peace can help your child decompress and refocus.

Mindfulness techniques are another effective tool. Teach your child simple breathing exercises, like taking slow, deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. For younger kids, you can call it “belly breathing” and make it fun by having them place a stuffed animal on their tummy to watch it rise and fall.

If anxiety persists or interferes with daily life, don’t hesitate to seek professional support. A counselor or therapist can provide tailored strategies and a safe space for your child to explore their feelings.

Remember, anxiety is common and manageable with the right tools and support. By being present and proactive, you can help your child navigate their worries with confidence. Have questions or tips? Let’s connect—I’m here to help!
